The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership

By Andrea Moore, Senior Consulting Manager, FlashPoint

In April, FlashPoint will facilitate The Leadership Challenge® Workshop during a two-day public session. The developers of this popular program, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, built it around research they have conducted for more than 25 years. As part of their work, Kouzes and Posner questioned hundreds of thousands of subjects about their leadership skills. "By studying the times when leaders performed at their personal best," they write, "we were able to identify five practices common to most extraordinary leadership achievements."

During the workshop, we review in detail these Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®, and participants explore how to apply them in their daily lives. To give a preview of the practices (and, we hope, to provide helpful advice even for those who don't attend the workshop), we discuss here what they are and give examples of what they look like in action.

Regardless of context or situation, the five practices serve as helpful reminders for all leaders.

Read the rest of the article to learn about the five practices and how you can focus on them to become a better leader. To learn more about The Leadership Challenge® Workshop, see the promotion in this eFlash or visit our website.

Tips from the FlashPoint Team--Advice on Employee Handbooks

FlashPoint conducts human resource assessments for many organizations, helping to ensure they're following best practices and remaining compliant. Consultant Jeremy York oversees most of these assessments and finds three key areas in which organizations often fall behind: record keeping, recruiting, and employee handbooks. Previously, Jeremy gave some tips on the first two of these areas. This month he offers the following advice related to the final area, employee handbooks:

  • Review and update your employee handbook every two years to ensure that it is compliant and contains the most recent policies and procedures.
  • Stay up-to-date on laws and regulations affecting HR and revise the handbook accordingly.
  • Consider new areas that you need to address. HR is affected by our ever-changing society, and at times you need to incorporate new policies into your handbook. (For example, a few years ago no one had ever heard of a social-networking policy; now more and more employers are establishing one and including it in their handbook.)
  • Review and evaluate the effectiveness of each policy. Ask yourself: Does it apply to today's business model, is it doing what I need it to do, does it contain loopholes, does it help to ensure fair and consistent treatment of employees?
  • Review the "voice" of your current policies and evaluate their ability to convey your organization's culture, mission, vision, and values. Determine if policies foster the environment that your organization wants to create.
  • Identify policies that are repetitive or overlap. Determine which policies can be combined and/or streamlined for easier comprehension.
  • Consider placing the handbook online or offering it in an electronic format that can be accessed by all employees--this is especially important if you have employees offsite or at multiple locations.

These are just a few of the things you should consider for your employee handbook. For more details on these tips or to learn about additional advice, contact us or visit our website.

In addition, the Indiana Chamber just released its final legislative report for the year, covering the activities of the recently concluded session of the Indiana General Assembly. The report includes the following section on labor relations:

Results from Barnes & Thornburg's 2010 EFCA Preparedness Survey

Earlier this year, Barnes & Thornburg LLP conducted an EFCA Preparedness Survey, which was designed to measure the level of concern and preparedness of companies likely to be affected by the Employee Free Choice Act.

The firm recently released the results, which indicate that although the majority of business executives and human resources directors say they largely oppose the passage of EFCA legislation, they do believe the legislation is likely to become law in some form. Results also show that while a majority of senior executives are educated on EFCA, their frontline supervisors, managers, and employees have not been trained on the legislation's content and potential impact.
